Arthur Carter, age 87, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, June 30 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Art was a lifelong resident of the valley, born in Glenbar on July 13, 1922. As a young man, Art worked with his father and brothers bailing hay. He joined the Navy during WWII, then came home and married Rinda Lou Ferguson. They made their home in Safford where he worked and retired from the Highline Canal Company. Art and Rinda raised 3 children, Rodney, Bill and Cindy. Art loved the outdoors. He and his family spent many summers camping under the Oaks at Carter Camp at Cedar Springs. He loved fishing, feeding the quail, playing cards and spending time with his family. After he retired, he and Rinda enjoyed spending the summers camping in the White Mountains and out to Cedar. Art leaves behind is loving wife of 63 years, Rinda, and his children Rodney (Carol) Carter of Safford, Bill (Charlotte) Carter of Thatcher, Cindy (Randy) Zwerk of Tucson, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 brother, Horace of Pima, and 3 sisters, Nathalene (Max) Green of Safford, Wilma Rhinehart of Safford, and Reva (Gary) Allred of Utah, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Polly Carter, and brothers Morris and Jay Carter of Pima. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 5, 2010 at 10 a.m in the Thatcher LDS Stake Center by Bishop Kevin Jensen. The family will receive friends at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the Church. Interment will be in the Pima Cemetery with military honors provided by the Gila Valley Honor Guard.
