Arthur Enock Stromness Jr. 1923 ~ 2008 Arthur Enock Stromness Jr., age 84, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008 due to complications related to Parkinsons disease. He was born December 23, 1923 to Arthur Enock Stromness Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Worthen Stromness in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a boy he was very industrious and always had a job. He cut and sold firewood and helped his family, who was in charge of the ward welfare project, during the depression years. He also had a bicycle and his own ice-cream route which covered Salt Lake City and out to the airport. He was an Eagle Scout and earned his Bronze, Silver and Gold Eagle Palms. He always supported the Boy Scouts of America and made regular donations to Primary Childrens Hospital. He graduated from South High School and attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah prior to joining the United States Navy during WWII. He was a Navy Seebee and was assigned to many locations in the Pacific including the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. After the war, he worked as a tour bus driver in Yellowstone National Park and as a lifeguard in Zion National Park. He returned to Salt Lake City where he met Shirley Dee Hansen and they were married September 8, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple; He then joined the Naval Reserve, during the Korean War, and was stationed in San Diego, California. He was very patriotic and loved to display the American Flag. Art worked for Kennecott Copper Corp. For 32 years. He worked part time for JC Penney Co. and the Utah State Fair for many years where he was in charge of the Hobby Exhibit. Art was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the temple baptistry, as the Deacon Quorum advisor, ward missionary, counselor in the bishopric and a home teacher. Shirley preceded him in death December 31, 1996. Art married Kathleen Louise McConnell Steele September 2, 1997 in the St. George Temple; later sealed in the Jordan River Temple. They then served a mission to the Ft. Worth Texas mission. He always helped with the church building fund and volunteered his labor on the construction of church buildings. He loved working with wood and built many wooden toys and games. He also loved to travel. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his children: Ted (Laurel) Stromness, Janet (Robert) Kopotic, Margie (Michael) Anderson, Dr. Lynn (Julie) Stromness; Kevin (Cindy) Steele, Brenda (Chris) Lenz, Todd (Chris) Steele, and Darrin (Margaret) Steele; 34 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren who loved him dearly; brothers: Wilford (Bill) Howard Stromness and Sheldon Reed Stromness. Also preceded in death by his parents; sister, LaMar and a baby brother. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 24, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Twin Peaks Ward, 5290 So. Wesley Road (1220 East). A viewing will be held Sunday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Monday at the church, 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Elysian Burial Gardens.
