Bernardo Vega Jr., "Gordo" of Safford Arizona peacefully entered into rest on July 27, 2023 in his home, surrounded by his family at the age of 82.
Bernardo was born on July 2, 1941 in Morenci, AZ to Bernardo Vega and Gumesinda Bejarano. He grew up in Morenci and graduated from Morenci High School in 1959. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country from 1959-1965. While in the military, he was recognized for Expert rifle m-14, Carbine, and the good conduct medal 1st award. After he was honorably discharged, he worked for Phelps Dodge mining company. In 1973 he married his wife Evelyn Marquez. They moved to Safford, AZ and made their home. He went on to continue his education at Eastern Arizona College and graduated with an Associates Degree in Architectural Drafting in 1987. He later became a truck driver and travelled across the country. He returned to Phelps Dodge and worked as a shovel runner for over 25 years until his retirement in 2006.
Bernardo was a jack of all trades who drafted architectural blueprints and renovated many homes and buildings around Graham County. He donated his time and skills to the Catholic Church, making pieces commissioned by the father. Bernardo was exceptionally skilled in woodwork, carpentry, masonry, electrical, and architectural design but most of all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn Vega, his son, Bernardo Vega III, daughters, Mary (Eddie) and Linda (Jaime), eight grandchildren, Gabriella (Heriberto), Lorena, Antonio, Andrew, Jamie, Diego, Nathaniel, Gisella, and his dog, Nogi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernardo Vega and Gumesinda Bejarano, and his siblings, Pauline Sanchez, Jose, Ladislao, and Rodolfo. He is survived by his brother Domingo.
A visitation will be held at McDougal Caldwell Funeral Chapel at 5 p.m. on Monday July 31st 2023. A rosary recitation and mass will be held in his honor at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 9 a.m. on Tuesday August 1st 2023 with interment at Safford Cemetery.
