Beverly Porter

Beverly Jane Slabaugh Porter 1917 2010 Beverly Slabaugh Porter died on July 21, 2010 at the age of 93. She was born on January 8, 1917 in Salt Lake City to Edwin P. Slabaugh and Susan Hampton. After graduating from East High School and attending the University of Utah, she moved to New York City to study voice. While in New York City, she married Robert Rampton Porter of Salt Lake City in 1938. They subsequently moved to Zambia and South Africa and lived there for eighteen years while Bob worked as a consulting metallurgist. They had four children: Phillip (Elizabeth) Porter, Salt Lake City; Christopher (Kathryn) Porter, Woodinville, Washington; Jeffrey (Nancy) Porter, Salt Lake City; and Susan Beckstead Porter, San Francisco. Beverly is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. After returning to Salt Lake City from Africa, Beverly graduated from the University of Utah. She was a member of Town Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Assistance League of Salt Lake City, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She also sang with the Utah Symphony Chorus and was active in school musicals at East High and at the university. A patron of the arts, she loved traveling, entertaining, and most of all had a true devotion to her family. She was an avid reader until her death. Special thanks are extended to Mrs. Emma Valle who cared for her for many years in her home and to the staff of Brighton Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, University of Utah. Graveside services will be conducted at Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Tuesday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m. followed by refreshments and memories at Town Club. Arrangements under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.
