Gilbert A. "Charlie" Gherna, 85, of Safford, entered into rest on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Tucson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 25, 1929 in Naco to Charles and Maria Gherna. He married his lovely wife Linda Jaime and they lived in Naco. While in Naco, Charlie worked for Phelps Dodge Mining Company in the Mill. In 1974 they moved to Morenci and he worked as a Supervisor in the Mill for Phelps Dodge. He retired in 1997 after working 45 years in the mine. He was very active in the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, and served in many capacities. Charlie was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan and a L.A. Dodger fan to the end. He loved to garden and especially loved coaching baseball with his sons. He loved to watch them play. He is survived by his wife, Linda Gherna of Safford; sons, Gilbert Gherna (Martha) of Tucson, Humberto Gherna (Carmen) of Tucson, Art Gherna (Frances) of Safford, David Gherna of Safford, and Marc Martin Gherna (Jenny) of Safford; daughters, Linda Franco (Jesus) of Hermosillo, MX, and Martha Gherna of Safford; 16 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 9:00 a.m., Rosary will be at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Safford Cemetery.
