Eduvigen "Vicki" G. Martinez, 88, passed away with her family at her side on January 11, 2016. She was born April 25, 1927 in Hamlin, Texas to Damas and Enriqueta Gonzales. She was the sixth of nine children. She married Celestino O. Martinez on December 23, 1946 in Monahans, Texas after a whirl wind romance. She was a determined young bride who taught herself to cook, sew, and maintain a home but MOST important, to be a mother. She could prepare meals from the barest essentials to feed her seven children.Vicki's husband, Celestino, passed on July 13, 1968, this was one of her greatest hardships as she was widowed at the ripe old age of 39. Her choices were limited as she was left to finish raising five of her kids alone, but she made due with what she had. Despite her limited education she was able to travel on her own, by car and plane, across the country to the east coast when our son, Hector was critically hurt. She was a very resourceful woman. Her children and grandchildren were her world and she was always ready to share what she had with an open heart. Her grandchildren remember her making tortillas and toasting them crispy and putting butter on them. They were the best!On January 31, 1970 Vicki married Robert Granillo and the following year their son Albert was born. Vicki had a love for plants and in particular flowers. She spent hours growing them inside and outside. Her hands were capable with a hoe or a shovel in the garden and could also turn out fine needlework. Toward the end of her life, even in severe pain, she was concerned about her family and continuously thanked them and told them how she loved them. She rarely smiled; she was serious, shy and a gentle soul yet she had a wit that would come out of left field that would astonish you.Vicki is survived by her children; Grace (Edward) Nabor, Pablo (Emily) Martinez, Olga Martinez, Hector Martinez, Xavier (Shannon) Martinez, Nora (Karl) Maez, and Albert Granillo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Damas and Enriqueta Gonzales, husband, Celestino O. Martinez, son, Celestino O.
