Filemon Martinez

March 5, 1924 — April 11, 2010

Filemon Martinez Phil Filemon Martinez went home to be with our Savior on April 11, 2010. Born March 5, 1924 in Skarda, New Mexico to Rafael Martinez and Regina Herrera. As the second of twelve children, and the eldest son, Phil spent his early life on the family farm in New Mexico helping his parents raise a large family. Married in 1950 to the love of his life, Frances Chavez, of Salida Colorado, and relocated to Salt Lake City that same year. Phil was a dedicated husband and exceptional father to Belinda (Von Roskelley), Phyllis (Terry Seyler), Darlene (deceased), Melodee (Brian Edwards), Yolanda (Cruz) and David Martinez (Clara). Loved dearly by his 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He worked in the construction trade in Utah most of his life, but enjoyed telling stories of his younger days as a lumberjack and farmer in New Mexico. Loved fishing, hunting and the beauty of the mountains, and always found ways to shower those around him with small acts of kindness and generosity. Phil loved music and the circle of fellowship of his church family. Survived by his wife, Frances; 5 children; 5 sisters: Elsie, Betty, Annie, Helen, Beatrice; 1 brother, Robert; all his beautiful grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Bonita. Preceded in death by his parents; 5 siblings: Luis, Tony, Richard, Ida and Dora; and his baby daughter, Darlene. The pain of our loss is beyond words, but we celebrate his wonderful life, we know he lives on through us, and we know we will see him again. Go to rest, Pipa. We will love you forever. See you in the morning. The family greatly appreciates the care and compassion shown by Dr. Randall Watson, Al Gutierrez, Jan Ryan, Mike, Ruth and the entire Symbii Hospice team. A viewing will be held Wednesday April 14, 2010, 6-8 PM at Mt. Calvary Worship Center, 3280 West 3100 South where a funeral service will be held Thursday April 15, 2010, 10 AM . Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park South Valley, 13001 South 3600 West. For those who cannot participate, please visit www.legacy.com (filemon-phil-martinez)
