Flora Fay Merrell, 91, of Safford, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at her home in Safford. She was born on July 17, 1921 in Bisbee, AZ, to Lafe and Sadie Nelson and spent her growing up years in Safford. As a young lady she was well-rounded and enjoyed playing all kinds of sports, especially softball, basketball, and track. She could also be found climbing trees, dancing, acting, playing the violin, clarinet, and piano. She married Meriner Ward Merrell on December 12, 1941, and they spent nearly 66 years together before his passing in 2007. She attended the Gila Academy and earned her AA degree there. Flora was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully over the years as Relief Society President, Junior Sunday School Coordinator, and as a Primary and Sunday School teacher. Flora is survived by her son, Dale (Bonnie) Merrell of Globe; daughters, Judy (David) Lunt of Thatcher, and Joan (Craig) Bull of Bonita; daughter-in-law, Connie Merrell of Casa Grande; a sister, Judy Rogers of OK; a brother, Lee Nelson of UT; a sister-in-law Gabriela Nelson of Mesa; 24 grandchildren and 94 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Meriner; son, Dean Merrell; brother, Jay Nelson; grandson, Chad Merrell; great granddaughters, KyLee Lunt and Stephanie Udall. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012 at the Safford LDS 20th Street Church. Viewing will be on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the McDougals Caldwell Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Thatcher Cemetery.
