Florene Shurtz, 82, passed away peacefully in her home in Central, AZ on August 5, 2014, with her son by her side. She was born July 29, 1932 to Floyd and Irene Butler in Taylor, AZ. Florene was married to the love of her life, Gale Shurtz, and together they celebrated 54 plus years of marriage. She raised a wonder son, Dell (Merlene), and was blessed with four grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was adopted and loved by many who called her grandma. Florene loved to sew, quilt, crochet and cook and she taught quilting at Eastern Arizona College for seventeen years. She has blessed the lives of many with beautiful clothes and night gowns. She has sewn and created thousands of priceless quilts that many have enjoyed. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central 1st Ward. Florene served the Lord faithfully in many callings and she was always providing service to those around her. She is survived by her son Dell (Merlene) Shurtz and her brother Larry (Aileen) Butler. Florene was preceded in death by her parents; Floyd & Irene Butler, her husband Gale Shurtz, two brothers; Jay and Wendell Butler, and her sister Peggy. There will be a viewing Monday, August 11, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Caldwell Funeral Chapel in Safford and again on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Central Chapel. Interment will follow in the Central Cemetery.
