Franz Buchanan Nelson 1929 ~ 2009 My sweet knight in shining armor has left me to return to his Heavenly Father and waiting arms of loved ones beyond the veil. For fifteen years he has dealt quietly and valiantly with Alzheimers Disease. He was blessed to be able to spend his final days peacefully at home, with loved ones about him. Franz Buchanan Nelson was born on September 15, 1929, to Elmer Eric and Birdie Buchanan Nelson in Provo, Utah. He passed away on June 4, 2009 in West Valley City, Utah Franz graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, then served in the US Army during the Korean War. Married Shyrma Loy Hendrickson on October 24, 1957 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Franz was a faithful and devoted husband and father of five children. He was also a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and willingly served in many capacities. He was a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple where he could use his language skills in Spanish, Portuguese, French and German. He loved to take his sons on fishing and hunting trips, and the family went on many camping and sightseeing vacations. He loved classical music, and he took his wife on many dates to the Utah Symphony, Ballet West and Utah Opera productions. He worked very hard as a real estate salesman and broker of New Life Realty to provide for his family. He loved his grandchildren and always entertained them with his bird calls and animal sounds and they all remember his spinning top. Franz is survived by his wife; children, James (Laura), Rosanne (Will) Rickett, Dwight (Christy), Nathan (Jodi) and Lisa (Mark) Vinson; 21 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson; sisters, Yvonne (John) Goodrich and Ellen (Peter) Sorensen. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon and Eric; sister, Naomi. The family wish to thank Life Path Hospice caregivers, especially Carrie and Manny, for the wonderful care they have given to Franz and for their caring concern for his wife. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 10, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the Jordan North 8th Ward, 3800 South 4000 West. Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and at the Church from 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.
