Gay LaVern Thompson, 74, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home in Tucson from the effects of his battle with cancer. He was born on October 20, 1935 in Poteet, TX, to Albert Clarence Thompson and Mamie Lee Smith Thompson. Gay grew up in Thatcher. He served in the U.S. Army, and then went to Barber School in 1959. He worked for Duval and Cyprus Mines for 25 years and retired in 1997. He was a member of the American Legion Post 32 in Safford. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy L. Thompson; sons, Gary G. Thompson and Ferrin G. Thompson; daughters, Amanda D. Johnson, and Cindy C. Ratzlaff; sisters, Joyce Ford and Ina Gable; and a brother, Eldon Thompson. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Letha East, Era Loy McKernon, and infant Doris; and brothers, Leonard Thompson, Jerry Thompson and Tollie Thompson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Caldwell Funeral Chapel, 112 East Main Street, Safford. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Thatcher Cemetery with Military Honors.
