Gerardo Smith

Gerardo P. Smith, 82, of Safford, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2011, in Safford. He was born July 9, 1929 in Pirtleville, AZ, to Guillermo C. Smith and Francis Pinon. He married Mary Sanchez in California. Mary passed away several years ago. Gerardo graduated from Douglas High School, Joined the U.S. Army 11th Airborn Division in 1946 during WWII, was awarded the WWII Victory Metal. He served his country for three years. He has been a memember of the American Legion Post 32 Honor Guard for many years. He is survived by his brothers, Ruben (Kay) Smith of Phoenix, Alfred (Adriana) Smith of Safford, Ernesto (Karen) Smith of Douglas; sisters, Yolanda (David) Guaderrama of San Diego, CA, and Betty (Andres) Escarcega of Pirtleville, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16,2011 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with Rev. Father Edward Lucero as Celebrant. Viewing will be on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Rosary being recited at 12 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Sanchez Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post 32.
