Gertrude Moses, 79, of Peridot, Arizona, passed away March 28, 2017. She was born October 13, 1937 in Calva, Arizona to Lewis & Happy Moses.
She attended school at the Bylas Day School graduating from the 8th grade and then in 1951 she went to Fort Apache Boarding School. In 1954, at the age of 17, she married David Dan Goseyun, Jr. and together they had 8 children; Albert Dan Goseyun, Yolanda Dan Goseyun-Thorne, David Dan Goseyun III, Stephen Dan Goseyun, Sr., Obrien Dan Goseyun-Geraldine, Karen Lucy Dai-Raymond, Debra Jean Goseyun and Lolita Beth Benally-Michael.
They raised their family in Calva, then later in Bylas, AZ. In 1964 they divorced and Gertrude married Louie Serna in 1971 and they lived in Fort Thomas, AZ. Gertrude & Louie had 2 children; Tommy Serna and Sara Lynn Serna. In 2013 they divorced and in May 2013, Wayne and Yolanda Thorne took her into their home where she stayed until she peacefully took her last breath.
Gertrude taught her children how to shoot and then skin and quarter deer. She taught her grandchildren how to fish, clean and grind Acorns and how to make tortillas. Her favorite hobbies were hunting elk & deer, acorn hunting, fishing, making cradle boards, bead work, making dolls (which she was famous for and sold them in Australia, Denmark, China, Switzerland and the United States), needle work, making purses out of yarn, rock hunting (Peridot fire agate), making baskets, loved to fix things such as radios, lamps and car mechanics, anything that was broken. She also loved to sing and was a very compassionate person. She played guitar, ukulele, harmonica and drums. In her spare time, she loved to watch detective movies and westerns.
Gertrude is survived by 3 of her siblings; Olivia Moses of Needles, CA, Geraldine (Vernon) Poncho of Bylas, AZ and Timothy (Duk) Moses of Tucson, AZ, 24 Grandchildren, 36 Great-Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great Grandchildren and a God-daughter, Mary Bullis.
She was preceded in death by her mother Happy Moses, Grandparents Bert & Golucia Nasby, sons Tommy Serna, Albert Dan Goseyun and daughters Debra Jean Dan Goseyun and Sara Lynn Serna and God-mother Lucy Rutin.
A Wake will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. at the Moses residence in Bylas with the Funeral service on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church also in Bylas. Interment will be in the Nasby family plot in Bylas.
