Howard Coverston

October 14, 1925 — January 7, 2013

Howard A. Coverston was born October 14, 1925 to Clarence and Eva Mae Coverston at Oak Creek, Colorado. He is the oldest of four children. Howard grew up and went to school in Colorado. He joined the Navy during the World War II serving in the European, Southern France & African Theater aboard LS7 505. After he was discharged, Howard came to Arizona and settled in Bisbee, going to work for Phelps Dodge underground, till 1975, then at Morenci in the smelter. Howard married Lois Irene in 1961; their life was spent in Bisbee and Safford. Howard retired from Phelps Dodge in 1982. After retiring, he spent a lot of time riding a bicycle picking up cans on the highway. He was a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church. Howard was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Eva Mae Coverston; wife, Lois Irene and sister, Irene Carter. Survived by brothers, Dick Coverston of Henderson, Colorado, Edward Coverston of Craig, Colorado; daughters, Loree McCarty of Haydon, CO, April Savoy, Virginia, Carol Peeler of Safford, Patricia Washburn of Stanwood, WA; son, Geo Halbert of Sierra Vista, AZ; many grandchildren & numerous great & great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service for Howard will be held Monday, January 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Safford Cemetery; the Gila Valley Honor Guard will perform military honors. Services are under the direction of McDougals Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
