Irene Coverston

Lois Irene Coverston, 89 of Safford passed away at her home on April 27, 2010. Irene was born February 15, 1921 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to James & Pearl Cunningham. She was the oldest of 7 children and spent her growing up years in many places across the Southwest. She married Vernon Halbert in 1939 and had 4 children. Vernon passed away in 1950. Irene married Howard Coverston in 1961 and spent their married life in Bisbee and Safford. They had a daughter April and stepdaughter Lorrie. Irene worked as a hairdresser for 33 years. She enjoyed her retirement by working at crafts, gardening, painting, quilting and crocheting. She was a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church. Irene is survived by her husband Howard Coverston of Safford, children George Halbert of Sierra Vista, Carol Peeler of Safford, Patricia Washburn of Washington, April Savoy of Virginia, step daughter Lorrie McCarty of Colorado and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings James Cunningham of Mesa, Maurice Cunningham of Washington, John Cunningham of Phoenix, Nancy Willoughby of Colorado and Mary Stockton of Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Halbert, son James Halbert and brother Earl Cunningham. Graveside Services will be conducted Friday, April 30, 2010 at 1 p.m. in the Safford Cemetery.
