James Martin Truitt 1917 ~ 2008 James Martin Truitt, 90 years old, died October 21, 2008 in West Jordan, Utah. Born 28 December 1917 in Webb, Tallahatchie, Mississippi to Thomas Shephard Truitt and Sarah Josephine Williamson. Jims father died when he was two years old and he was raised by a beloved uncle and aunt, Edwin and Bertie Grantham. Jim worked hard as an airplane mechanic since the late 1930s and repaired planes and cars up until his mid eighties. Jim said the turning point in his life was his baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ouachita River, Louisiana on 29 August 1948. Jim married Cora Retha Stephens in 1951; she died two months later of tuberculosis. Jim married Alta Chamberlain 5 March 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After a few years of living in Monroe, Louisiana, Alta said, Lets move back to Utah, the wind doesnt blow there. They lived the rest of their married life in either the Salt Lake Valley or Denver, Colorado. Alta passed 1 May 2007. Jim will be remembered by many for his wonderful garden from which he shared his canned beans, zucchini relish, beet pickles and peaches. He also helped many with his generosity. He had a feisty spirit but a good heart. Jim will be missed by all who knew him. Jim was preceded in death by his father, mother, infant brother Edwin; brother Paul, who died in North Africa in WWII; brother, Thomas G. Truitt; sister, Elizabeth Madden. Survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. The family would like to express a special thanks to Garden Terrace and Legacy Care Centers for their tender care of James. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Copper Canyon Ward, 5349 West 9000 South where a viewing will be held Saturday, 9:30-10:45 a.m. Arrangements under the direction of McDougal Funeral Home.
