Jewel Lee Jones-Higgins was born May 18, 1932 in Okemah, Oklahoma. She was the second eldest child of four born to Ceolia and L.C. Jones. The family moved from Okemah, Oklahoma, to Safford, Arizona, in 1949. She remained in Safford, where she resided until her departure. Jewel retired from Eastern Arizona College after 26 years of dedicated service from 1971 to 1997. She was a very strong and independent individual who embraced life to the fullest. She loved people and her sense of empathy and kindness towards others touched everyone she encountered. She was a devoted Christian; her favorite saying was: The Lord is going to work it out, no need to worry. She was a true devoted member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in little Hollywood. Jewel was preceded in death by her parents Ceolia and L.C. Jones, sister Dorothy Watts. To cherish her loving memory, she is survived by: her brother, Willis L. Jones Sr; sister, Ivory Mae Hatchett of Oklahoma City, OK; son, Calvin Higgins (Denise) of Safford, AZ; daughters, Carol Russell (Carl) of Phoenix, AZ, and Margaret Hayes of Sierra Vista, AZ; four grandchildren, Brandon Russell, Jalen Higgins, Torin Higgins and John Overstreet; and one greatgranddaughter, Mariah Russell. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A viewing will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Caldwell Funeral Chapel from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. at New Life City Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the New Life City Church. Superintendant Rayford Strong will celebrate the services with Dr. Phillip Tutor. Interment will follow in the Safford Cemetery.
