Jose Sambrano Rivas, Jr., 65 of Safford passed away June 14, 2011 after a brave battle with cancer. Joe was born December 9, 1945 in Miami, Arizona to Jose Sr. and Estafana Rivas. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Joe worked for several businesses in the Gila Valley, but is best remembered for his many years at the Safford Cemetery. Joe was a friend to anyone he met, helping them anyway he was able. Joe loved western movies, and music, riding around the valley, horse back riding, shooting guns, and playing with Chuco. Joe is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Rivas, daughters Jessica Jo Rivas & Malinda Marie Rivas; and three grandchildren, Dereck Joe Rivas, Anthony Jesus Quintana, and Allyssa Noel Quintana. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Pena, Christina Reyes, and Lydia Chavarria; brothers, Edward Rivas, and Johnny Rivas. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Edward Lucero at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Church. Rosary services will begin at 7:00 p.m. Graveside commital will be in the Safford Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Gila Valley Honor Guard.
