John W. Nelson, 83, of Safford entered into rest on Tuesday, August 21, 2012. He was born on September 29, 1928 in Avery, TX to Zeddie Nelson and Ursla Moore Nelson. John was a skilled wood carver who created many beautiful carvings during his life. He was so good at his craft that he was chosen to carve a mural for a 100 year capsule. He also loved to shoot trap and skeet, go fishing and hunting. He enjoyed these hobbies, but even more, he loved spending time with his family and friends. On December 31, 1948 he married his lovely bride, Monte Salters in Franklin, Arizona. They were married for 61 years before Monte passed away on November 11, 2009. Professionally John worked as a cabinet maker and carpenter. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Monte Jeanene Salters Nelson; his sisters, Mary (Bill) Winton, Maudie (Ray) Hartley, Bessie (J.V.) Allen; and his brother, Bill (Jean) Nelson. He is survived by his daughter, Linda J. Warren; and his sister, Susie Gale. Services for John will take place on Saturday, August 25, at McDougals Caldwell Funeral Chapel in Safford. Friends are invited to attend a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 11:00 a.m. Final interment will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in California.
