John Paul

John Leo Paul, Jr. 1922 ~ 2008 Our loving husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, John Leo Paul, Jr., passed away September 4, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He was born March 6, 1922 in Rexburg, Idaho, to John Leo and Isabelle James Paul. He joined the Marines and served in the South Pacific during WWII. Leo married Elly Simonsen in the Salt Lake Temple November 21, 1945. He spent two years in Afghanistan helping to design and develop irrigation systems. He retired from Salt Lake County where he worked as a highway engineer. Leo enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock hunting, jewelry making, gardening, painting, family history work and especially spending time with his family. He served the Lord faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including a 1 year Family History mission, and a sealing group in the Jordan River Temple, and many other callings and responsibilities. Leo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elly; children: Ellen (Robert) Jackson, John (Jeanette), Fred (Gail), Caroline (Kent) Shields, Kim (Jeanette), James (Alyce), and Von (Balbina); 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren (3 more on the way); sisters: Ardelle and Jeannette; brother, Don. Preceded in death by sisters: Lois, Lione and Marjory. We would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Utah and the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home, where he spent the last two years of his life, for their loving and compassionate care. Funeral services will be held Monday, 11;00 a.m. at the Hunter 5th Ward, 5000 West Janette Avenue (3985 S.). A viewing will be held Sunday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Monday at the church, 10-10:45 a.m. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park.
