Maria Luisa Varela, 94, a long-time resident of Duncan, passed away peacefully at her home on June 25, 2016. She was born May 14, 1922 in Metcalf, AZ, to her mother, Maria Medina. Luisa grew up in Morenci, graduating from Morenci High School. After graduation, she devoted her life to caring for her husband and children. She enjoyed being a seamstress, crocheting, puzzle books and watching game shows. She even won the grand prize ribbons for her sewing and crocheting at the county fair. Luisa also always remembered how excited she was when she finally saw Vicente Fernandez in person. She lived a great life and will always be remembered by those who knew her. Luisa is survived by her children, John Varela, Narciso Varela Jr. and Tommy Varela, siblings, Max Marin and Alice Jimenez, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Narciso Varela, Donna Corona, Pauline Jacques, Eduvina Rodela, Carmen Duran, Salvador Medina and Chale Medina. Services for Luisa will be on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Duncan with a viewing beginning at 8 a.m., Rosary being prayed at 9 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial being held at 10 a.m. Interment will immediately follow in the Duncan Cemetery.
