Patton Kwan

Patton Way Hep Kwan 1931 ~ 2010 Patton W. Kwan passed away peacefully on March 16, 2010, from complications due to Alzheimers disease. Pat was born in the Sam Pan Po village in Canton, China on August 20, 1931 to Check Foon and May Cue Kwan. He is the youngest of four children. He left China a few days before the complete border closure by the Communist government in 1949 with his dear uncle Fulton and a cousin. They resided in Hong Kong for a year, then traveled by ship to the US. Arriving in So. California in October of 1950, he was reunited with his father who had been living here for many years. He proudly became a US citizen in March, 1951. After owning and working in the restaurant business for nearly ten years in the Los Angeles area, he decided to travel east to see the US. He made it as far as Salt Lake, where he met his future wife, Janet Butler. They married on November 20, 1962 in Las Vegas. They have two children, Colleen (Kyle Madsen) and Justin. Poppa is adored by his grandchildren, Brady and Kirra. Pat owned and operated the Highway Caf with Janet from 1965 to 1969. His favorite and most successful restaurant was the Kowloon Caf, located in West Valley. He purchased the business from friend, mentor and cousin, Charlie Wong in Jan. 1973. He remained close to Charlies family all his life. He and Janet retired from the restaurant business in Sept. 1991. He made many friends there, both customers and employees and he cherished them all. He is survived by, his wife of 47 years, his children, and grandchildren, his sister Tui Chung Kwan, in-laws Ann Henderson, and Michael Butler (Cathi), as well as many wonderful cousins, uncle, nieces, nephews and close friends. Preceded in death by his parents, two older brothers, and brothers in law, Mac Butler and Tom Henderson. A viewing and gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, March 26th, at the McDougal Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm, 4330 S. Redwood Road. Graveside services will be held at Redwood Memorial Estates Saturday, March 27th at 11:00 am. The family would like to thank those who stopped by, called, cared and prayed for Pat over the years. Hearts were lifted up through your kindness.
