Peter Miranda Bertoldo, Jr. 81, formerly of Safford, Arizona, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona. A native of Arizona, he was born February 21, 1930, in Solomon, Arizona, to Pedro and Rosenda Bertoldo. He attended Solomon Schools and Safford High School, graduating in 1955. During the Korean Conflict Pete served in the in the Air Force and was stationed in Germany as a communications specialist. After serving in the Air Force he returned to Safford and later met and married Irene Abeyta of Safford in January 1955. He spent many years working, as a telegraph operator for Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads in New Mexico and California. He also worked for the Ft. Grant Reform School for Boys as a correctional officer and later worked as an electrician for Magma Copper Company, in San Manuel, Arizona, and for Phelps Dodge Corporation, in Morenci, Arizona. After leaving Phelps Dodge, Peter moved to Tucson where he remained until his passing. He is survived by one brother: Manuel Bertoldo, of Safford and four sisters: Celia DeLeon, of Pomona, California, Rosie Garcia, of Tucson, Irene Ferguson, of Queen Creek, and Sylvia Blake, of Battle Mountain, Nevada. He is also survived by five sons: Paul of Safford, David of Sahuarita, Peter the Third of Queen Creek, Robert of Chandler, Mark of Denver, Colorado; and two daughters: Juanita Vasquez, of Chandler, Lisa Bertoldo, of Tucson. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Bertoldo, in 2007 and a son, Ronald Bertoldo, in 1981. He was also preceded in death by his parents: Rosenda and Pedro Bertoldo, of San Jose, and two brothers: John Bertoldo, and Arturo Bertoldo and two sisters: Lupe Sanchez and Priscilla Avila. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Edward Lucero at the St. Rose of Lima Church on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the Church on Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Safford Cemetery with military honors provided by the Gila Valley Honor Guard.
