Rafael O. Montoya, 84 of Thatcher passed away December 21, 2009. Rafael was born October 22, 1925 in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Rafael & Petra Montoya. He married Felipa Juarado in 1947 and they were blessed with seven children. He enjoyed singing Mariachi music, cooking and volunteering throughout the community. Many will remember Rafael singing at many occasions and parades in the Gila Valley. Rafael received many awards and recognitions as he served in the community, at St. Rose of Lima Church, and as a singer. He dearly loved his family. He was a beloved husband to his wife Felipa, a wonderful father to his seven children and 3 beautiful granddaughters that he raised as his own and a devoted grandfather. Rafael was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Church and was active as a Crusista. Rafael was preceded in death by his wife Felipa and grandson Steve Palomino Jr. He is survived by his children Lucia (Mike) Rowland, Petra (Ernest) Torrio, Ralph (Terri) Montoya, Raymond (Terri) Montoya, Mary (Ernie) Lilly, Jane (Arnold) Aguayo, Joey (Lydia) Montoya and 33 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Church. Visitation will be at Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. with a Rosary Service at 9 a.m. at the Church. Interment will be in the Safford Cemetery.
