Richard Lindsay

Richard Powell Lindsay 1926 - 2010 Richard Powell Lindsay died in Salt Lake City, June 4, 2010, from causes incident to cancer. Richard lived an abundant life. He was born March 18, 1926, in Salt Lake City to Samuel J and Mary Alice Powell Lindsay as the fifth of six children. He grew up and spent most of his life in his beloved Taylorsville, Utah, on ground his grandfather homesteaded. Richard graduated from Granite High School in 1942. He joined the Navy as an officer candidate at the age of 18. He served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Swiss-Austrian Mission from 1946 until 1949. On November 17, 1949, Richard married Marian Bangerter in the Salt Lake Temple. Richard and Marian cherished and served each other for more than 60 years and raised a family of six children. Theirs was and continues to be a romance for the ages. Richard valued education and obtained a bachelors degree in 1953, from the University of Denver, a masters degree in 1965, and a Ph.D. in 1976, from the University of Utah, all while being a loving husband, father, providing for his family, and carrying heavy Church and civic responsibilities. Richards career took various turns. He was a Utah State Commissioner of Finance, executive director of the Utah State Employees Association, first administrator of the Utah Juvenile Court System, director of the Utah Council on Criminal Justice Administration, director of the Utah State Department of Social Services, director of the Bureau of Community and Economic Development at the University of Utah, and an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University. He served as a Democratic member of the Utah House of Representatives and in the Utah State Senate. In 1978, Richard began working for the Church as the director of Special Affairs and later became the managing director of Church Public Communications/Special Affairs and represented the Church on many interfaith coalitions. Richard served faithfully in the Church in every capacity to which he was called including bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, stake president, member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, ward choir president, and home teacher. He loved serving people, especially those in Taylorsville and in Africa where he was the Churchs first Africa Area President. Through kindness and love, Richard and Marian developed deep relationships with people all over the world. Richard is survived by his wife, children Bruce (Shari), Gordon (Kathleen), Susan Gong (Gerrit), Sharon Lyons (Doug), John (Ann), and Mimi Warnick (Paul), 26 grandchildren, 20 great-grand-children, brother Kenneth (Bonnie) and sister Mary Jensen (Forrest). Richard was preceded in death by his parents, brother Powell, and sisters Ruth Shumway and Grace Mackay. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at the South Jordan River Ridge Stake Center located at 10190 South 1000 (1050) West and again on Wednesday, June 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Interment at the Taylorsville Cemetery.
