Scott Andrew Sumpter, 64, of Morenci, AZ, joined our Lord on Wednesday, February 24, 2016. Scott was born in Mesa, AZ on July 4, 1951, the second of three sons to Dixon and Julia Sumpter. Scott attended Westwood High School, graduating in 1970. He was a Webelos troop leader, and also earned his Eagle Scout. He met his wife, Diana, at Tonto Rim Baptist Church the summer they both turned 17. Once they met there was no turning back; they would have been married 45 years the day after he passed. He proudly served in the U.S. Army after graduation, and spent three years in Germany as a combat engineer. Once back home, he worked in Tempe, AZ for an electronics manufacturer making electronic components. He then moved to Morenci, AZ in 1981 to begin working for Phelps Dodge. Known as Thumper to his coworkers, he was a train engineer, and then drove haul trucks in the pit. Scott was always actively involved in his community, serving others through various organizations and church membership. His great sense of consideration for others resonated through all that knew him, from his love of baking gingerbread (especially his trademark gingerbread outhouses) and giving it away to people, or crafting Native American pieces to gift to anyone just to see them smile. Many will remember his enthusiasm for Halloween decorations, Star Trek, and civil war history. Scott brought light and love to all that knew him. He will be greatly missed. He is now watching over his beloved wife of 45 years, Diana Gonzalez-Sumpter and his three much-loved daughters, Dixie, Feliz, and Maya Joy. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Church in Morenci to celebrate a wonderful friend and father.
