William Kay Empey 1922 ~ 2010 William Kay Empey our loving husband, father, & grandfather was called to his heavenly home on May 6, 2010, to reunite with parents, brothers, sister and his son, Kay Dwight. Kay was born May 18, 1922 to Hyrum Bryner and Mary Ann Harradence Empey in St. George, Utah. Kay served during WWII, as a Navy Gunner on the freighter Moses T. Farmer from 1942-1945. New Year's Day, 1944, Kay married his sweetheart, Dorothy Ella Mitchell, later solemnized (1975) in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed 66 loving years together. Family was the center and joy of his life. Kay was happiest when working or playing out of doors; tending to his garden, fishing with children, and later, grandchildren, and out pine nut picking with the boys. He found joy in sharing his harvest with family and neighbors, even passing out his giant apples to trick-or-treaters at Halloween! We will miss his generous heart and sense of humor. After 39 years of loyal service at Hercules Inc., Kay retired in 1984, allowing time for travel with his wife and friends. Kay is survived by wife, Ella; son Randy (JoAnn) Newnan, GA; daughters, Sheila (Fred) Charles and Shauna (Wendell) Oakeson, West Valley City, UT; Linda Empey, Riverton UT; brother Preston (Glenna ) Empey, Tooele, UT. To 18 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren, Kay was known as the "Ice Cream Grandpa." Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 12:00 p.m. at the LDS Chapel, 4310 South 3200 West, West Valley City, UT, with a viewing Monday, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Tuesday at the church from 11:00-11:45 prior to services. Interment, Valley View Memorial Park. Many thanks for the loving support and care given by the Staff at Caregiver Support Network.
