Winston McOmber

Winston I. McOmber 1918 ~ 2010 Winston Isaiah McOmber, December 27, 1918, Oakley, Idaho - January 6, 2010, Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the fifth of seven sons and one daughter of Calvin D. and Achsah Stout McOmber. Raised on a dairy farm he learned to work at a young age as he worked the fields with teams of horses and made milk deliveries to residents of Pocatello and the Black Foot Indian Reservation. He helped keep the dairy running to support his older brothers on missions and in the military. In 1940 Winston served a mission to the New England States Mission. On June 5, 1944 he married his sweetheart, Louise Tyler, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and one week later received his draft papers for WWII. He survived fighting his way from the coast of Belgium, through the Battle of the Bulge and to Berlin, as a foot soldier, in the US Army. When he returned, he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Utah. He began his teaching career in Kamas, Columbus Elementary, South High School and West High School. He and Louise served missions to the Philippines and Manchester England, and he was a temple sealer for thirty years. He raised seven children and is survived by Brent, Bruce (Marie), Linda (Charlie) Burton, Tyler, Steven (Selu) and Stanley (Michelle); 27 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Teerlink. Preceded in death by wife of 64 years, Louise; daughter, Karen; son, Sidney; daughter-in-law, Teri. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1:00 p.m. at the Brighton Ward, 2925 East Bengal Blvd. Viewings will be held Friday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Saturday at the church, 12-12:45 p.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
