Zelma Hawthorne

Zelma Irene Hawthorne, 93 of Safford passed away February 27, 2010 at the Sunset Hills Care Center. She was born on April 16, 1916 in Ft. Chadburn, Texas. She attended the Arizona State Teacher College (ASU) and received a Bachelors Degree in education. She married Perry Hawthorne and together had two sons, Jack & Ralph. Mrs. Hawthorne taught at Safford High School for over 30 years. She taught DECA classes and had numerous state and national competitions. She was very active in the community serving on the Safford School Board, Gila Valley Woman's Club, charter member and past president of the Safford High School Scholarship & Education Foundation, member of the Gila Valley Women's Bowling for over 50 years. Mrs. Hawthorne enjoyed bowling, golfing, and spending time with her grandson and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Perry, and son Ralph. She is survived by her son Jack (Rose) Hawthorne of Chandler, grandson Jason Hawthorne of Chandler, great grandchildren Gavin & Lauren Hawthorne of Chandler. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Caldwell Funeral Chapel.
